This morning 17 new gTLDs were delegated to the DNS root. Donuts’ portfolio was supplemented by domains: .photos, .careers, .cab, .camp, .academy, .center, .company, .computer, .domains, .limo, .management, .recipes, .shoes, .systems and .viajes (the name of the last one is translated “travel” from Spanish). Chinese registry CONAC became administrator of domains .政务 («government») and .公益 («public interest»).
The current delegation not only increases the number of new gTLDs, but also puts an end to a heated debate of whether singular and plural versions of the same word can coexist as different domains in English-speaking network. The matter is that Uniregistry has already signed a contract with ICANN and is awaiting delegation of the domain .photo. The same can be told about domain .career, contract is signed with dotCareer. A lot of registries and independent analysts had repeatedly expressed the idea that coexistence of similar domains in singular and plural form can cause confusion and open new possibilities for unfair players of the domain market. However delegation of domains .photos and .careers clearly indicates that ICANN does not share these concerns and is not going to change it's mind.
