ICANN issued recommendations on name collision identification and mitigation

ICANN Corporation prepared detailed recommendations on preventing domain names disputes. Document is addressed to IT professionals and analyzes in detail causes of conflicts and also offers specific steps to prevent them.

The report points out that name collisions in the private networks and global DNS system are not new, however active delegation of new TLDs makes it a reason for concern. The report explains causes and mechanisms of queries leaks from private networks into the global DNS. Professionals are recommended to make name lists in their private networks and compare them to the list of new TLD strings, then apply necessary measures to eliminate collisions. The document stresses that usage of Fully Qualified Domain Names (FQDNs) in private networks guarantees their stable function and division of queries addressed to private networks and global DNS-system.
