Chief security officer leaves ICANN

Jeff Moss, Chief Security Officer, will be leaving ICANN in the end of 2013 after two and half years with the company. His position will be taken by John Crain, who has worked for ICANN for more than 13 years.

Moss announced, that despite leaving ICANN he is planning to remain active in the community. After Moss’ leave, John Crain will be managing all Security, Stability and Resiliency direction. Crain has been working for ICANN for more than 13 years and, before the new appointment, was the Chief Security, Stability and Resiliency Officer.

Jeff Moss and John Crain worked together on the problem of string similarity in top level domains. WIth the new gTLD program, the problem is up to date, and Moss had undertaken some steps for solving it while working with ICANN: "We are taking a slow and careful approach to this issue and since the roll-out of new generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) will be very gradual, I'm confident that name collisions will not pose any major issues that can't be responded to responsibly," said Moss. "Now that we have a clear path forward, I feel like this is a good time to announce my departure."
