Support of IDN can be made mandatory

Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) and Country Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO) ICANN presented its final report on the support issues of internationalized top-level domains.

Internet-community has done a great job for domains with non-Roman script to be supported everywhere and always. Nevertheless, ICANN actions in this direction remain passive and piecemeal. This can hinder the development of the Internet and negatively affect users’ trust in the system of domain names itself, especially with the creation of many top-level domains, including internationalized ones. Authors of the report note that even several registries and registrars do not support IDN-domains fully.

The report contains proposals for a number of measures so that IDN-domains can gain greater distribution and general support. In particular, the working group proposes to make support of internationalized domains mandatory for all the accredited registries. Moreover, it is recommended to make support of IDN one of the priorities of ICANN activities with corresponding changes in the strategic plans, organizational structure and budget of the corporation. Apart from that, the document emphasizes the importance of education of internet-community in IDN and further study of possible technical problems associated with this type of top-level domains.
