“Shutdown” domains have spiked

The US government shutdown activity because of the lack of budget agreements between the President and the Congress has been reflected on the domain industry as well.

VeriSign reports that since the shutdown, the number of shutdown-related domain names spiked considerably: around 150 domain names containing the word “shutdown” have been registered in .com and .net domains over the last 3 months. VeriSigncomments that this is a typical picture: any major event, good or bad, leads to an increase in domain activity that seems to be correlated.
