ICANN decaled on registration agreements signing concerning four new top-level domains. Thus the number of the applications having passed quite a complicated selection has reached 26. The new luckies are domain names .uno, .menu, .sexy and .世界.
All the new domains new open for registration. Domain .uno is oriented firstly on Spain and Italian-speaking Internet users. Domain .menu supposes to attract second level portals this or that way connected to gastronomy and deli topics. Domain .世界 is obviously meant firstly for Chinese users (it’s name is translated as “world”, ‘planet”). Concerning domain .sexy, anyone can guess about its future himself. At the same time it became known that four additional top-level domain applications will be permitted for evaluation. They are three competing applications for .wine domain and one supposing registration of .vin domain.
They all are obviously connected to the wine theme and till lately a position of several countries in Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) ICANN representatives prevented their evaluation. They expressed concerns on the fact that correspondent domains registration may entail literary property rights violation while the following second-level domain names registration. Thus for instance at open registration in .vin domain anyone can registrate a second-level domain Champagne.vin and the notion “champagne wines” is protected by trademark and can be used only concerning wines produced in French province Champagne.
However GAC members couldn’t work out a unique position on this problem, which they informed ICANN of. Now all four applications for top-level domains will be permitted for evaluation.
