New domain applicants should better study geography

Five applications for top-level domains (gTLD) haven’t passed through the ICANN initial evaluation due to “geographic reasons”. According to ICANN rules, domains which names coincide with administrative regions of different countries can be registered only with support or at least written claims refusal on behalf of the corresponding countries.

It’s difficult to imagine that applicants are not familiar with this rule. It’s more likely geography is not their strong point. That’s why an application of an Indian manufacture conglomerate Tata Group faced a failure in initial evaluation for .tata domain. It turned out that this is the name of a small province in Morocco. German touristic company TUI AG which applied for .tui domain, wasn’t lucky either. It’s name coincide with the province name in Burkina Faso.

It’s more difficult to explain the mistake of Chinese company Guangzhou YU Wei Information Technology which applied for three domains at once, which name fully coincide with provinces in China itself: .深圳, .佛山 и .广州.

Now all these applications face a procedure of an extended evaluation.
