Registrars without new agreement will not be allowed to .ORG

Registrars accreditated in ICANN can lose their right to sell domain names in .org domain if they don’t sign the new agreement on accreditation with ICANN.

At the moment the six-years contract of the Public Interest Registry, the .org domain registry, with ICANN is coming to an end, and the registry is about to sign a new agreement. Among the offered ammendments to the new version of the contract with the registry is the registrars’ existence of a new accreditation agreement dated 2013. In case the registrars responsible for two thirds of the domain names in .org domain will sign the new accreditation agreement, the other registrars will only have 270 days for signing the same agreement, otherwise they will lose the right of selling domain names in .org domain.

Now many registrars accreditated in ICANN work on agreements dated 2009 and 2011. It’s now unclear whether the offered ammendments will be accepted.

Among other offers there are such as increasing prices for domains on 10% per year, maintenance of the registry lawbook which was developed for the new top-level domains program and the possibility of creating a registrar belonging to the .org domain registry. ICANN accepts offers and amendments to the registry agreement up to August, 12.
