ICANN 47th conference opened today in Durban (South Africa). The main event of the beginning of the conference was the signing of the first agreements with the new domains registries.
All the four domains which registries signed an agreement with ICANN today are internationalized. Registries will manage the Arabian domain شبكة. (“network”), cyrillic domains .сайт ("site") and .онлайн ("online") and Chinese domain 游戏 ("game").
Domains .сайт and .онлайн belong to Swiss organization CORE. Besides two cyrillic domains the company also sent an application for the domain .بازار («market»).
Signing the agreements with the registries of the new domains is a hugely important step for the program of the new top-level domains: it means the new domains will appear in Internet very soon. After signing the agreements the registry will be able to directly switch to testing new domains and begin a phase of the priority registration already in a couple of months.
“During the last several months our teams have managed to achieve the unbelievable”, - says Fadi Chehadé, CEO of ICANN. - “We are impatiently waiting for the new achievements and new signed agreements with registries as well as delegating the new top-level domains this year already”. ICANN also signed the first new agreements on accreditation with registrars. The new agreements takes into consideration the demands of the program of the new top-level domains, and it is expected that accreditated registrars will sign these agreements with ICANN in the upcoming year.
