Two british banks forgot to extend their domain names registration

Two quite large British banks didn’t manage to renew the registration of their domain names in time at once. The owners of the banking accounts in Clydesdale Bank and Yorkshire Bank didn’t have a possibilty to use online banking for two days.

Both banks belong to the National Bank of Australia and have a sole banking license, their whole year income is several billion pounds. In the end of July the clients couldn’t check out the banks’ websites - cbonline.co.uk and ybonline.co.uk correspondingly.

The banks themselves explained that by “technical works”, nevertheless many users acknowledged that at the attempt of navigate to the necessary web-page their browsers displayed a message about the necessity of extending the registration. These messages are confirmed by the Whois data where it’s stated that the registration period flew out June, 26th.

From all appearances the employees of the banks simply forgot to extend the registration of their domain names. As a result the registration was renewed, although with some delay, so the final can be considered satisfactory. Theoretically one can imagine a final when domain names cbonline.co.uk and ybonline.co.uk would’ve gone to other owners after the registration expiration, and in that case the unpleasant consequences would’ve been much more serious both for the banks and for the clients.
