Verisign company made a report on domain industry condition. According to the company there had been more than 252 mln domain names by the end of 2012.
In the fourth quarter of 2012 there had been registered more than 6 mln domain names. The number of registered domain names has grown for 11.8% or 26.6 mln domain names per year.
A little less than half of all the world domain names are in .com and .net domains: nowadays there are 121.1 mln registered domain names in these two domains. The growth in the two domains which are also managed by Verisign has been 6.4 percent per year. The extension of the domain names in .com and .net domains in the 4th quarter of 2012 happened in 72.9% of all cases.
Verisign is one of the largest domain market players: the company manages several top-level domains which include .com domain and two registries of country domains (.cc and .tv) as well as two of the 13 Internet names servers. Moreover, the company is applying for some new top-level domains: in particular the application for cyrillic .КОМ domain belongs to it.
