iTunes Store displays .xxx banners to unsuspecting Russians

As Apple revealed iTunes 11, several more countries got their iTunes Stores, including Russia. Some Russians, however, were pretty much surprised to see "adult content" banners displayed in the movie section of the store.

Users trying to reach the movie section of the newly-launched Russian iTunes Store were greeted with banners displaying ads for .xxx, an "adult content" top-level domain. .

The banners were probably displayed due to a placeholder domain address like http://xxxxx.xxx/, but the iTunes Store programmers seem to have forgot that the .xxx top-level domain has gone live last year. .

ICM Registry uses some of its .xxx addresses – including domains like xxxxx.xxx, xxxx.xx and others – to promote its adult content search system, .xxx. .
