Russia's .ru rated fifth largest ccTLD in the world

By the end of the second quarter of 2012, the Internet is home to more than 240 million domain names, a 7,3 million increase compared to the previous quarter, according to Verisign's report. Verisign also notes that registrations have grown by 25.5 million, or 11.9 percent, year over year.

Among these 240 million, 100.3 million domain names are registered in ccTLDs which show 18.5 percent increase year over year.

Overall, there are 280 ccTLD extensions globally that are delegated in the root, including IDNs, with the top 10 ccTLDs comprising 60 percent of all registrations. These ccTLDs include Germany (.de), Tokelau (.tk), Great Britain (.uk), The Netherlands (.nl), Russian Federation (.ru), China (.cn), European Union (.eu), Brazil (.br), Australia (.au) and Argentina (.ar). Russia's .ru is rated ninth largest in the world and fifth largest among ccTLDs, retaining its place in the rating since the last quarter.

The largest top-level domain in the world is .com, while .de is the largest country-code domain.
