ICANN announced the statistics about the received new gTLDs applications. Altogether the non-profit organization has received 1930 applications for 1409 gTLDs.
“Arguable” gTLDs claimed on average by 3-4 applicants account for 230 and the applications for such gTLDs make up 751 (39 % of the total amount). Applicants from 60 countries are taking part in the new gTLDs program. It is worth mentioning that not all domains from the list which will be published later will have their place in the Internet: each application will go through a long procedure of reconciliation.
The USA takes the firm first place by the number of gTLDs in the race of applicants: participants from this country applied for 911 (47, 2%) domains. The second and the third places are taken by Europe with 675 applications (35%) and the Asian and Pacific Region (303 applications or 15, 7% of the total amount). Only 24 (1, 2%) applications were received from Latin America and the Caribbean Sea countries and 17 (0, 9%) – from African countries.
Besides that ICANN received some applications for gTLDs with non-Latin alphabet. Such applications make up 116 or 6% of the total number. We remind that within the framework of new gTlDs the Coordination Center acted as a founder of “Smart Internet” foundation which deals with the promotion of domains for the young Internet audience .ДЕТИ.
The Companies presenting the support services of new gTLDs have already announced the number of received applications. So, the market leaders Neustar, Afilias and VeriSign announced about 358, 305 and 220 applications respectively. The total share of applications supported by the “G 3” of the domain market makes up 45, % (883 applications). Another major market leader Donuts (307 applications in association with Demand Media). The companies with a significant number of applications are an Australian Company ARI Registry Services (161 applications), British Registry Nominet (7applications), Austrian Nic.at (11 applications) and French Afnic (16 applications).
Other market players supported applicants who have already announced their intentions, they include Minds+Machines (92 applications, 68 applications belong to the company), Demand Media (26 applications) and Internet Systems Consortium (54 applications in association with Uniregistry).
It is expected that today in the afternoon ICANN will announce an exact list of gTLDs which were applied for. The Coordination Center will highlight the events associated with the new gTLDs program. Follow the news!
