It is possible that Google has invested heavily in new generic top-level domain program. Charleston Road Registry, a newly emerged registry, has applied for 101 domain, or 5% of the total number of applications received by ICANN.
The complete list of domains that were applied for during new gTLD program includes a company that was never heard of before, Charleston Road Registry, Inc. While the registry may be new, it still has applied for 101 domain, or a whopping 5% of the total number of applcations. All companies that have filed a solid number of applications have reached out to press somehow; nevertheless, Charleston Road Registry, Inc. made its first appearance in ICANN's list published today.
The registry applied for a massive number of popular domains, including .baby, .cloud, .dad, .kid, .tech, .web и .zip, as well as some domains that are identical to popular services like .blog and .search. Charleston Road Registry, Inc. has also applied for domains that are identical to Google's trademarks – .chrome, .gmail, .google, .youtube, .androidand others. Last but not the least, the main contact in Charleston Road Registry, Inc. is Google's senior analyst, while Charleston Road Registry seemingly takes its name from Charleston Road, Google's headquarters address in Mountain View, CA.
Previously, Google had expressed its interest in new gTLD program. With the Internet giant's extensive technical capabilities, it may as well be able to create a new registry from scratch, serving dozens of new top-level domains.
