New gTLDs Will not Have Preference in Google Search Engine

A company may have a number of reasons to submit gTLD application. One of them is the preference in a search engine output. By popular opinion, gTLDs may at default take a higher rank in search engines. It is associated with the idea that a gTLD may have a higher weight for search algorithm than a second level domain.

However the potential candidates for gTLDs may be wrong. In his blog, Matt Cutts, an engineer in Google team, who is responsible for the quality of the search output, dispelled the myth that new gTLDs will receive search preference.

«Google is going to try to rank new gTLDs in a proper way. But I don’t think that a new gTLD will have some initial preference over domain .com and I won’t hope for that in the nearest future”, said Google engineer in his blog.-“If you want to register a new gTLD for some other reasons, then this is your choice but you should not register a new gTLD being wrongly sure that you will have preference in search outputs”.

It is not clear how this information will affect the flow of applications for gTLDs. The research held by Afilias shows that at present 44% of major companies are planning to submit applications for gTLDs which are similar to the company brand name.
