The "ё" letter is currently used in almost 7000 domain names in the .РФ domain

On May 24, Russia and many countries of the world celebrate the Day of Slavic Literature and Culture. The holiday is dedicated to the Memorial Day of Saints Cyril and Methodius, who created the alphabet and gave start to the writing of the Slavs.

Today, Cyrillic is one of the alphabets that is used not only in traditional "paper" writing, but also on the Internet - and at the level of TLDs. Internationalized domains (IDNs) have become commonplace today, and more and more content in national languages appears on the Internet. The largest Cyrillic domain in the world is the Russian national domain .РФ, which recently celebrated its birthday, and it plays a significant role in the preservation and development of the Russian language on the Internet.

“The role of the .РФ domain is growing every year - we see how the volume of Russian-language content is growing, how new resources are appearing. Just last week at RIF 2022, it was reported that in April 2022, 80% of the population over the age of 12, or 97.5 million people, used the Internet in Russia. This is a huge number of people who speak and read Russian, and the .РФ domain becomes an excellent guide for them on the Internet,” said Andrei Vorobyev, Director of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ.

By the Day of Slavic Writing, the Coordination Center analysts have prepared interesting statistics on the use of both individual letters and whole words in the .РФ domain. The most "popular" (as expected) was the letter "a" - it is used in more than 425 thousand or 63.3% of domain names in .РФ. Among the consonants, "P" is on top, which is used in almost 384 thousand domains. But the notorious "ё", about the need for which whole in the Russian language discussions regularly unfold, is seen in a little less than 7 thousand domain names in .РФ. Less often, only a hard sign is used - 2.5 thousand domain names.

As for the words used, here the shortest meaningful word is the word "accounts" - in the domain "счеты.рф". The domain, however, is still in the parking lot. Nearly 15,000 .РФ domain names use the word "auto". Almost 14 thousand - the word "house". Next in terms of frequency of use are "world" (5072 domain names), "city" (3454), "Moscow" (2809). Of the nouns, the words "business" (2186), "year" (1784), "day" (1194), "flowers" (1013) and "work" (964) are also popular. 100 Cyrillic domain names in .РФ represent phone numbers, and 2,379 domain names contain only numbers.

By the way, the celebration of the Day of Slavic Literature coincides with the birthday of the Moscow State Linguistic University, with which the Coordination Center has long-standing partnerships. This year, the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ held a quiz for MSLU students based on the game "Study the Internet & Govern It." The winners of the quiz were awarded prizes from the Coordination Center. Members of the Youth Council of the KC have also took part in the celebration. They also took part in an interesting tour of the MSLU Museum.

The tour was conducted by the assistant to the Rector for educational and patriotic work Nadezhda Danilova. She told the participants of the tour about how the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages (now MSLU) lived during the Great Patriotic War. More than 700 students, staff and teachers then volunteered for the 5th division of the people's militia, whose combat path ended in the Austrian city of Graz. From the very beginning of the war, students and teachers of the institute worked as interpreters during interrogations of prisoners of war and radio intercepts, as well as propagandists who addressed enemy soldiers from trenches or special vehicles through loudspeakers. Detachments of interpreters were also formed for operations behind enemy lines.

And even after the capture of Berlin, the war for MSLU students had not yet ended - so, in August 1945, 80 people were sent to Germany to work as interpreters. Employees of the institute became interpreters at the famous post-war trials: Nuremberg and Tokyo. The work of interpreters at the Nuremberg trials became a practical start for the development of simultaneous interpretation in the country.
