ICANN 73 has started

ICANN 73 meeting has started online again on March 7.

As usual, the official start of the conference was preceded by a so-called "preparation week" – ICANN 73 Prep Week, which was attended by the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ experts. Coordination Center specialists also participated in a session dedicated to the Universal Acceptance of non-Latin domains and email addresses on February 23. During the online meeting, the Chairs of all UASG Working Groups, Local Initiatives, and Universal Acceptance Ambassadors from around the World briefed the ICANN community on their accomplishments and progress towards implementing Universal Acceptance in 2021 - early 2022.

Maria Kolesnikova, Chief Analyst of the Coordination Center, submitted the outcomes and current projects of the UASG Communication Working Group, and also shared the results of work and plans of the Local Initiative for Universal Acceptance of the CIS and Eastern Europe. “At ICANN meetings, the sections on Universal Acceptance are some of the most attended in recent times. The topic is of great interest, as well as, especially, real examples of how colleagues in different countries are promoting the Universal Acceptance of non-Latin domains and what approaches they use to attract the attention of developers, governments and the scientific community to the need to implement standards in the field of internationalization,” she added.

Andrey Aleinikov, public relations specialist of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ, addressed the session, dedicated to Capacity building by ccTLDs, on March 3rd. Participants of the meeting, representing the registries of Armenia, Brazil, Italy, Nigeria, Russia and South Korea, shared their experience, approaches and tools used for the development of their ccTLDs. Andrey Aleinikov described projects and initiatives aimed at involving Russian youth in the Internet Governance process, like: the Summer School on Internet Governance, the activities of the Youth Council of the Coordination Center, the Special Course for the Youth on Internet Governance, the IP&IT LAW competition, the Digital Reality discussion club, and also the new outreach project of the Youth Council "ABC IG", which aims to provide a wide audience with an idea of ​​key phenomena and developments in the field of Internet Governance.

On March 7, ICANN 73 started with the traditional Technology Day, which opened with the DNS Abuse session. Head of the DNS Abuse Institute, Graeme Bunton, spoke about the ideology of DNS Abuse preventive tools based on identifying potentially malicious domains before registration or delegation. He noted the advantages and disadvantages of using preventive measures on both the registries’ and registrars’ sides, and shared a basic workflow for dealing with potentially malicious registrations. Further, ICANN representatives discussed the news of the DNS Core Census project, which was presented in October 2021 at the 72nd ICANN meeting and which is dedicated to the development of a tool for collecting public information about top-level domains. They also presented a new project rssac002.root-servers.org - a tool for monitoring a set of parameters root servers defined in accordance with the RSSAC 002 "Advisory on Measurements of the Root Server System" specification.

On March 8, ccNSO sections, as well as a special PTI section, which has received delegation of authority of Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) 5 years ago, were held with the participation of representatives of the Coordination Center. The PTI Board shared the results of its annual Strategy Workshop, which took stock of PTI's progress over the past five years and identified areas for special attention, in particular with regard to improving the management of the IANA functions.
