People should be aware of the social and psychological impact technology can have

On August 26, the Digital Reality discussion club held a meeting devoted to the regulation of artificial intelligence.

AI has become a driver of change in the information space, but the consequences of its use are not always positive. The society has concerns about the ethical aspects of AI and the threats posed by its malicious use. The meeting participants discussed the relation of artificial intelligence to personalization, the limits of its acceptable use and the need to create a code of ethics for the development and use of AI. They also spoke about how much algorithms know about us, who is interested in the distortion of AI for the purposes of personalization, what stakeholders need to be able to access and use super-personalized systems for, and whether there is a contradiction between personalization and diversity.

Andrei Ignatyev, research adviser at the Department of Digital Economy and Artificial Intelligence at the MGIMO University, spoke about the regulation of artificial intelligence and said that humankind has been fighting evil since the beginning of history and one of the important elements of this battle is searching for our own moral compass and understanding how the world works. “People are paying more attention to where we are going, and this understanding is used to devise concrete regulations for various sectors. We need to begin with understanding what we want to regulate and outline the concrete applications such as personal data protection,” he said.

Darya Bazarkina, Professor at the Department of Russian International Security and Foreign Affairs, Institute of Law and National Security, Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA), said that it is important to raise awareness of the social and psychological impact of the use of technology because our psychological vulnerabilities are becoming more obvious in the modern world. Participants in the meeting discussed the impact of artificial intelligence on our lives and spoke about cancel culture, which could become a key instrument for civil society to express dissatisfaction with the policy of large corporations.

The next meeting of the Digital Reality discussion club will take place in September. Stay tuned!
