ENOG 17 sees record number of registered participants: 1,224

On November 9-13, the ENOG 17 | RIPE NCC Regional Meeting, organized by RIPE NCC with the support of the Coordination Center for TLD.RU/.РФ, is held online. It is a unique event that brings together technical experts representing various ICT companies: vendors, service operators and internet providers. This year’s conference has been the largest so far with 1,224 participants from 85 countries having registered.

Participants in the “first ever virtual ENOG” were welcomed by ENOG Program Committee Chair Alexei Semenyaka, RIPE Senior Community Builder Mirjam Kühne and RIPE NCC Managing Director Hans Petter Holen. Mirjam Kühne, who has been appointed community head quite recently, talked about RIPE’s priorities and next tasks, which include stepping up work in the region and establishing cooperation with potential community members.

“The more active our community is, the more productive its work will be,” she noted.

In the run-up to ENOG 17, Coordination Center Director Andrey Vorobyev answered the organizers’ questions. In his interview, he noted that the main purpose of the center’s participation in ENOG was to create and maintain cooperation mechanisms between operators in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia.

“This year, almost all events are held online. This format has its own specifics. On the one hand, there are fewer opportunities to talk face to face on the sidelines and at social events, but on the other, it helps increase the audience significantly. This is true for many other international events during the pandemic in which representatives of the Coordination Center have participated,” Andrey Vorobyev said.

During this week, ENOG 17 participants will discuss essential issues related to internet development in the region. The conference’s main topics include monitoring of DNS and TLD domains, BGP security and transfer to IPv6 as well as the results of testing the udtp transport protocol, among other things.

Coordination Center experts are taking part in the ENOG 17 program. For example, on Thursday November 12, the center’s Chief Analyst Maria Kolesnikova will share news and objectives of Universal Acceptance. She will talk about the achievements and prospects of Universal Acceptance of IDNs and EAI and current formats of international and regional cooperation in this area. Maria Kolesnikova will also present the Coordination Center’s new project, Поддерживаю.РФ (https://поддерживаю.рф/), that focuses on building an ecosystem to support Cyrillic domains and emails.

The idea to organize the ENOG forum was first proposed in 2010. The forum became a logical extension of RIPE NCC’s regional conferences in Russia and neighboring countries. The first ENOG conference was organized by RIPE NCC in 2011 and held with the support of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ, the Technical Center of Internet and MSK-IX. All ENOG 17 events are streamed live and can be watched later. Join the stream.
