The .ai domain to release a number of names soon

Such major domain registrar as Dynadot has declared a new auction. It intends to sell the Anguilla’s domain names (.ai) with expiring registration, which the owners are not going to renew. Domain Name Wire deems this move a smart business decision. The company will be able to earn a hefty amount: its commission will make up 15 percent of each transaction, while the number of the transactions is expected to be big enough.

To understand why, one should recall the story of the .ai rapid popularity growth. It coincided with the AI technologies gaining popularity. Way back in early October 2024, the once modest Caribbean island state had 533,068 registrations. Since then, their number has exceeded a million, and their snowballing registrations growth began about two years ago. Meanwhile, Anguilla’s domain names are not cheap at all: their annual registration costs $80, and the minimum registration term is two years.

It means that the .ai domain is approaching the point that domain investors refer to as a “junk drop.” This term is normally used with respect to new generic top-level domains. In the beginning, many investors registered names there hoping to see how things will proceed in the domain zone to resell them at a profit in case of success. If things are not going that well, registrations simply are not renewed after a year: for this reason, many new domains, a year after they were launched, show a steep decrease in the number of registrations.

Naturally, .ai, is not a new domain but the situation looks similar in many respects. Two years ago, investors registered their names in this zone en masse. Now it is time to renew the registrations, but the $160 for another two years is impressive enough, especially when the domain portfolio is large. Therefore, it is logical to expect that a considerable number of names in the .ai domain will become available, so the Dynadot’s auction will be quite on time. Of course, no one id likely to refuse to renew the registration of what are clearly the most valuable domain names, but everyone has their own idea of what value is, and “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Therefore, the investors interested in obtaining names in the .ai domain should be on the watch.
