GlobalBlock service begins operation in China’s and Germany’s TLDs

The Brand Safety Alliance, an organization established on GoDaddy’s initiative, has reported an expansion in the number of domain zones where its GlobalBlock service operates. Launched two years ago, GlobalBlock has become the leading brand protection service in the domain space. The service allows rights holders to add their brand names to a blocklist, preventing the registration of domain names that match those brands across numerous domain zones. Its extended version, GlobalBlock+, goes further by also blocking the registration of similar domain names, including those using homoglyphs, hyphens, altered letter order, and other variations.

In addition, the service features an automatic domain name interception function called Priority AutoCatch. If a domain that matches or is similar to a brand name was registered before being added to the blocklist, it will be blocked as soon as its registration expires and is not renewed. This prevents the domain from going to auction and potentially ending up in the wrong hands.

Since its launch, GlobalBlock has prevented the registration of more than 5 million domain names, and over 10,000 domain names have been intercepted using Priority AutoCatch.

According to Domain Incite, GlobalBlock has expanded its coverage by 70 domain zones at once and now protects 780 domain zones, including generic top-level domains (gTLDs), country-code domains (ccTLDs), and blockchain domains. Notably, the service has added China’s .CN and Germany’s .DE country-code domains – two of the largest domain zones after .COM, with over 20 million and 17.8 million registered domain names respectively. However, there is a fly in the ointment: .COM remains unavailable for GlobalBlock protection.
