2020 Universal Acceptance Readiness Report published

The Universal Acceptance Steering Group (UASG) has published its 2020 report. The document shows achievements and problems regarding Universal Acceptance of new and internationalized domain names (IDN) and email addresses (EAI). In particular, it notes that 98.3 percent of the top 1,000 websites globally can accept email addresses based on short (no longer than three characters) new TLDs, while only 9.7 percent of email agents can potentially support emails in scripts other than Latin.

According to UASG’s research, banking, government and educational websites show the highest level of Universal Acceptance readiness, while e-commerce platforms have the lowest acceptance rates. Germany is the leading country on UA. It is worth noting the initial results of research on email software readiness to support EAI that has not been published yet but is mentioned in the report. In particular, the data reveal that Apple Mail, a mail user agent (MUA), displays EAI mail well but cannot send EAI mail. Thunderbird MUA has the same problem. And Yandex webmail can send EAI mail but cannot receive it. Large domains (with over one million names registered) exhibited the highest level of UA readiness among email servers: 10.5 percent of the domains sampled indicated EAI support. However, IDNs were significantly less ready at only 4.7 percent.

The UASG’s report also focuses on the promotion of UA and related educational projects. In this context, the document notes the activities of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ. In particular, it praises the training on EAI deployment for system administrators the center held in May; the Поддерживаю.РФ project; the Digital Breakthrough hackathon where the center’s UA case “Домен.РФ” was presented; and other events.
