New domain .icu tops one million registered names

The number of names registered in the new gTLD .icu exceeded one million, reports Domain Incite quoting Kevin Kopas, COO of ShortDot that runs the domain. According to the file zone data, in late May the domain had about 900,000 registered names, so an increase of 100,000 registrations was achieved last month. On the whole, it took the domain a little more than a year to get a million registered names, which is an excellent result.

The success of .icu is easy to explain by its price policy. At present, the cost of the initial registration of a domain name is between $1 and $2, but the cost for renewals is more like $10. Naturally, such low prices are very attractive for those who want to register but, regrettably not all of them are bona fide. According to SpamHouse, in May the domain had a “badness” rating of 6.4 percent, which means that only 6.4 percent of all emails coming from .icu addresses were classified as spam. This figure is comparable with the results of the domain .com and is considered fairly good. However, in just a month, .icu’s “badness” rating almost tripled: now 17.4 percent of all emails from its addresses are considered spam. That said the performance of the domain .COM remained the same during the past month.
