Negative Trends Remain in Chinese Domain Market

The non-profit organization China Network Information Center (CNNIC), which is the registry of the national domain of the People's Republic of China .CN, published statistics on the results of last year. It has not brought any changes to the recent dynamics: the Chinese market continues to experience difficult times. To be honest, the number of names in .CN increased and now stands at 20,125,764 compared to 20,101,491. But the annual growth of 25,000 registrations can hardly be considered a success. Especially in comparison with the indicators, for example, of the other largest national domain zone - the German national domain .DE. With a significantly smaller population in Germany, its national domain grew by about 250,000 registrations - that is, it showed ten times better dynamics.

At the same time, the CNNIC monitors information about domain names registered by citizens and organizations of China not only in the ccTLD .CN, but also in all gTLDs, the Domain Incite reminds by reporting this news. And here the scene is completely distressing. If at the end of 2022 the total number of registered domain names was 34,400,483, then by the end of 2023 it decreased by almost three million - to 31,595,563. Thus, Verisign's complaints, which has cited the Chinese market decline as the main reason for the decline in registrations in its .COM domain for several quarters now, are obviously well founded.
